Serj Tankian (of System of a Down fame) solo in Zurich, Switzerland

Back at Komplex 457, which famously is reachable by bicycle (other than the Billy Talent show I shot the other week), Serj Tankian was on the menu. There had been big ads all over town, a phenomenon which always makes me fear that a big-name show is selling bad. Either the big ads paid off, or I shouldn’t have feared so much: The venue was well-filled, even already during openers Viza’s set.

It’s nice to know we live in a free world, where nobody (well nobody who has a say in the making of laws) really cares if you hang your country’s flag upside down and declare that both that is your logo and that by the way, you’re against the flag. I’m not for a flag or against a flag, I’m just saying in countries where you get thrown into jail for saying things against your government like Pussy Riot did, hanging the flag upside down probably wouldn’t buy you any friends either.

Mötley Crüe

In my last post, I got all started about the 80ies, and looks, and hair, and how hair and looks and sound should all together be awesome to make a great show. If anything, Mötley Crüe still seem to have their hair.

Tommy Lee (center in the above photo), of fame for his 360° spinning-over-the-fans drumkit stunts, sat behind what appeared to be a drumkit on a zero-shaped rollercoaster. I write “appeared” because there were tons of loops and electronic stuff – given his recent activities, maybe he should just have been DJing his part in. I’m sure you can strap a Macbook to a rollercoaster and pretend you’re still the daredevil. Looks: 75%, sound… well depends if you like the electronic stuff.

I have a thing for “old” rock music – 70ies/80ies metal and rock. For the most part, it’s just the perfectly balanced audiovisual pleasure; and personally I think neither the audio nor the visual stuff should be suffocating the other. Which is hard if you go to shoot Slash (feat. Myles Kennedy), a guy basically defined by his hair, opening for Mötley Crüe.

Sweet Home Alabama ← lame way to start this post, so I’ll start differently: Ready to rock, I made my way to Winterthur (which is a 30 mins train ride and a 15 mins walk through the pouring rain from my place). Eulachhalle is where they usually play Handball, which explains the rolled-up net above the stage that wasn’t used during the whole show (tadaa, sometimes, my brain does have its bright moments).

So far, my review of Sonisphere 2012 in Switzerland has consisted of concert photographer’s woes, and concerns about paying fans’s experience regarding weather, ticket and beer prices, and whether they would need binoculars to actually see the stage. How about the music? Well, with Mastodon’s set, much to the band’s chagrin, it got worse.
