Sonisphere 2012 in Switzerland has consisted of concert photographer’s woes, and concerns about paying fans’s experience regarding weather, ticket and beer prices, and whether they would need binoculars to actually see the stage. How about the music? Well, with Mastodon’s set, much to the band’s chagrin, it got worse. So far, my review of
I don’t know if they allowed Britney Spears’s mother backstage (she famously was banned from there after accidentally tripping over a cable and interrupting the playback, back when that was bigger news than her daughters non-music related actions). I don’t know why or how such a thing can happen if you have tons of experience setting up huge stages for the Metallicas, Madonnas, and Rolling Stones of this world. But Mastodon, playing on the stage where Metallica were set to play a couple of hours later, had massivest sound problems. And by that I don’t mean nitpicky “the bass was a bit heavy during this and that song”. I mean that the sound just went completely on and off all the effing time while you basically could watch the band miming their way through the set. It was bad. Or probably just Sonisphere luck. And I really felt for the band, because they actually played great (the bits that you could hear). A fellow photographer said to me on the way home that he was gonna pick Troy Sanders’ quote (“We’re getting fucked here!”) as the title for his review. I’m kinda sad to say that I can’t blame him.
About This BlogI post a couple of photos when I go to shoot shows here, and then again, sometimes I don't. Sometimes, Mr. or Miss Artist chooses to step on the stage late, inebriated, surrounded by half of Scotland's yearly production of fog, and lit from the back. In blue. There is no amount of awesomeness (and I have metric shittonnes of it when it comes to taking photos of concerts) that can make something like that look good on a photo. In situations like these, I don't even bother to lift my camera. So, even though you may have seen me in the pit at some show doesn't mean it's gonna show up here. No need to flood the net with more bad photos, really.
